Biden’s nominee to lead U.S. CBP says that he wants to enforce immigration laws humanely.

Chris Magnus, who is currently Tuscon Police Chief, also said that he supports COVID testing and vaccination of arrested migrants. However, Magnus said he’s open to closing the gaps in the border wall.

The CBP is under criticism both from Democrats and Republicans, immigrant advocates, and the president for mistreating Haitian migrants.

Magnus told Senators that CBP personnel will be trained to be more sensitive and humane dealing with migrants under his leadership.

Magnus can advance to a full Senate vote if he receives the votes from Democrats. The immigrant crisis at the US-Mexico border has led to the highest number of arrests in at least two decades.

While border-state lawmakers from both parties push CBP to tighten enforcement, immigrant advocates and liberal Democrats demand fewer deportations.
